Best Local Wine Bars in St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach

St. Petersburg, Florida is well known for its thriving beer scene: with 35+ local craft breweries offering artisanal beers brewed on-site, there’s no wonder we’re nicknamed the Gulp Coast! However, wine is no doubt having its own moment here. Recently, several new wine bar concepts have popped up and we’ve compiled a list of the best. Here are some of our favorite local wine bars that would make Dionysus proud!

Sola Bistro & Wine Bar

Just a few blocks away from the Alden is a St. Pete Beach favorite: Sola Bistro & Wine Bar. This European-style wine bar brings in an eclectic mix of wine from the world’s greatest winemaking regions. They pair the vino with a killer selection of tapas, including Figs & Chorizo, Pork Belly, and an Italian spin on shrimp and grits called Shrimp & Polenta. Cheese lovers will adore their generous Cheese & Charcuterie boards. ((HINT)): if you want to hang out with Chris and Dave of the Alden Cabana Bar, they can often be found here after work!

Lolita’s Wine Market

The great thing about Lolita’s (named after the owners’ precious rescue dog, Lola) is that it has a little bit of everything. It’s a wine bar meets coffee shop that features CYO (Create Your Own) charcuterie platters with an ever-changing assortment of cheeses, meats and accoutrements, Spanish/Mediterranean-inspired tapas and even a few local brews for non-wine lovers to enjoy! It’s quickly become a local favorite for its great and affordable boutique wine selection and eclectic menu that focuses on fresh products. Sit down and relax and make some new friends or take your food and wine to go and enjoy a gorgeous beach sunset or movie in a park.

Located in the heart of Downtown St. Petersburg’s Edge District, COPA is a middle-ground for wine and beer lovers alike and boasts an impressive selection of small plates inspired by flavors from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia. Try their signature spirit-based cocktails and pair them up with their various world-infused tapas. COPA offers inside seating at private tables or in their lounge or bar and outside seating in their upscale outdoor lunge or at a private table. They also have space for patio hookah on buzzing Central Avenue! COPA is perfect for anyone looking for an upbeat environment without the congestion of late-night experience.

Annata Wine Bar

North Straub Park is located just steps from the downtown waterfront and features scenic views, a recreation trail, a stage for varied entertainment and nearly 5 acres of lush landscaping. Just steps away from it is Annata—a restaurant and wine bar that welcome you to enjoy contemporary cuisine, warm hospitality, and unparalleled service. Their menu reflects a mix of fine dishes from Italy and abroad with local ingredients sourced from their relationships with bay area farms and suppliers. Stop by and enjoy their incredible wine selection and even more impressive charcuterie boards!

Try Wine

Situated on the first level of a mixed-use high-rise building on Beach Drive, Try Wine features 88 ever-changing self serve wine by the glass selections that can be dispensed in 3 different sizes (a taste, half glass, or full glass) from the many wine vending machines located in their tasting room. Discover something new and further your wine education or grab a table and enjoy wines by the half or full glass along with some charcuterie, artisan cheeses, popcorn or other food selections from their full-service restaurant menu. If you’re a wine lover or just learning, this place is a must-try.

A Taste for Wine

Downtown St. Petersburg’s original wine bar was established in 1995. They offer over twenty different wines by the glass, a curated selection from across the world. Don’t miss them on First Fridays, when they feature live music, great food and balcony seating overlooking all the action on Central Avenue.

Dracula’s Legacy Wine Bar

A cozy wine bar in the heart of downtown, this local haunt is owned by two Transylvanians who wanted to bring a little bit of their history with them to sunny St. Pete. Boasting a wonderful selection of white, red, rose and sparkling wines to choose from, as well as a delicious hand-crafted tapas menu, Dracula’s Legacy is perfect for an after-dinner drink with friends or a romantic date night. They also host a number of exciting events throughout the month like food and wine pairings, wine glass painting, artist parties, book clubs and even yoga classes. Make sure to stop by—Max and Ramona are DYING to meet you!

Our Best Guest Stories of 2019

Here at the Alden, we love to hear our guests’ stories and see your vacation photos. Throughout 2019 we received hundreds of submissions for our story contests, and gave away thousands of dollars in prizes to our storytellers. Here are some of the 2019 stories that touched our hearts, made us laugh, and helped us celebrate our 50th Anniversary!

“The hotel is kept with pride. Everyone is so friendly and the sun, pool, beach, and grounds are beautiful. We can walk to a great restaurant, stay-in in our suite, or just relax and unplug in the sun.”

I’ve been coming to The Alden since I was one year old, and have been coming here with my wife since getting married. This year, thirty-four years later, my wife and I brought our little boy to visit for the first time — along with my mom and aunt who have brought me here all these years. This place holds such special, happy memories for us that we acknowledged that happiness by giving our son Alden as his middle name! The 50th-anniversary party was his first plane trip to visit the Alden — but certainly not his last!

“Staff was very nice. Loved being on the beach. Loved the heated pools.”

Sunset at Alden with grandkids! Their 1st time at the ocean.

“The resort is right on the beach with access to shops and restaurants nearby. The rooms are spacious especially great for a large family of 6!”

My son wanted to celebrate his birthday at the beach with cupcakes

We got the honor of attending the epic 50th-anniversary party! What an awesome way to give back to all of your guests! Our second visit here and plan on staying many more times for our little family vacations!

“Been visiting The Alden for 48 years. We’ll be back next week for 11 nights for Thanksgiving. We love the “family feeling”

My first year, 8 years old. Alden Suites’ new wing under still under construction.

“Meeting Fred and Dee Zuroske 8 years ago during an annual spring Alden stay. Dee has since moved to heaven but we keep in touch with Fred and see him outside of our Alden’s stays. Fred is like another Grandpa to my girls. He has been coming to the Alden for 20 plus years and the St Pete area for 30 plus years. The Alden has a great family that owns it, has a great family that runs and works it and has great families that come to stay and play.”

Sissies sell seashells by the seashore…. aka Alden seashore. My girls painted shells one afternoon and then shared them with people on the beach that evening while watching the sunset.

“David and Chris at the bar are always our favorite reason for visiting. We had the chance to meet many other staff members for the first time during our 5 day stay and I have to say, you guys really just have the best staff around. So friendly, so helpful, so FUN!”

Letting loose in my resort wear the day before my wedding 🙂

“My husband and in-laws planned this trip and it couldn’t have been nicer! Staff was above and beyond kind and helpful- even when I needed something as random as super glue, they delivered!! Clean, lovely rooms! I could see us all coming back alone our bringing kids the next time! Nice mix of people- family-friendly as well. Very cool, Alden!”

First time parasailing and all the info was right outside our room on the beach! They even pulled up in the water right next to our umbrella to pick us up! Alden made our vacation super easy!

What better place than Alden Suites to celebrate a Birthday! We drove 1254 miles from Minnesota to celebrate our daughter’s 17th Birthday!

“From the start, our reservation was so easy. Our check-in was a breeze and the staff was very friendly and funny too. You can tell they love their job and are happy to make your stay the absolute best. Our room overlooked the gulf, and it was clean with plenty of linens and extra towels. The staff at the Cabana bar were equally friendly and provided tasty drinks with a smile. We will definitely go back!!”

The best way to do a Sleepover Birthday Party is @AldenSuites in St. Pete Beach!!

“Upon arrival, I went to the front desk to check-in, the 2 men working were so super fun! They were very kind and informative. Our room was perfect and clean! We were right by the elevator and it was surprisingly quiet! Our stay at the Alden Suites was beyond our expectations! The pool was lovely! We even spent some time at the Cabana Bar, and let me tell you we had a blast! The bartenders were so fun and the drinks were soooo yummy! I can’t wait to come back!”

My stay at the Alden couldn’t have been any better! From the staff to the view from our room, everything was amazing! 10 out of 10! 5 stars! We LOVE Alden Suites!

“Happy memories flooded the sandy beach and the crystal clear pools of the Alden Suites. Great food, great accommodations, and great conversation. “The sand may brush off. The salt may wash away. The tans may fade. But the memories will last forever.” #SummerTime #AldenFans #BeachBums”

“Wonderful front desk service and our room was better than we even expected. Thank you for making my daughter’s birthday weekend extra special!”

Beach Birthday Fun!

“I retired from my school position after 22 years and turned 60 at the same time and wanted to celebrate big with my family (17 of us) on the beach because that is where I love to be! My Uncle and his 2 daughters from NY flew in to join the celebration! It was the best 10 days of my life!”

“We started coming to the Alden Suites about 10 years ago. My husband and I decided we wanted to get married at our favorite place on earth, St. Pete Beach. We usually visit at least 2 times per year. We looked at other places but decided they were not “our beach”. The staff went out of their way to make our sunrise wedding exceptional. We brought family and friends with us for our beach ceremony. After the ceremony, we dipped into the gulf only to exit the water to cheering crowds on their balconies at The Alden Suites. Our friends and family love this resort also and now have returned and made The Alden Suites their favorite place too. The staff is so accommodating and friendly.”

Wedding Day July 20, 2018. The Alden Suites, St. Pete Beach, Florida. Best day ever!!

“My husband and his family have been coming here 50 years, we love it!! And will continue to come for all of our Florida vacations!!!”

Our daughters on our first vacation as a family of 5!

“We love to vacation at the Alden Suites. The rooms are actually set up so perfect for families with young children. They can nap in the bedroom and we close off the living room area to hang out while they are napping. We love the playground area and the beach bar for us of course. We’ve been coming to the Alden for about 8 years now, almost every summer we fly to St. Pete Beach from Colorado to defrost after the long winters here. We have family in St. Pete so we have so many special memories made there with family coming to spend the day with us on the beach. My grandfather is 93 years old WWll Veteran and comes to see us every summer while we are staying at the Alden. We are looking forward to continuing to make many more special moments during our stays each summer.”

We spent the week at the Alden beach resort relaxing on the beach and building sandcastles. My son took his first steps on the sand and fell directly on top of the castle we had just built and my daughter cried that “bubba” ruined her princess castle!

“We got to enjoy the beautiful dolphins on the beach every morning. Something I remember enjoying as a kid while visiting your beach. Thank you for always giving us the best memories.”

My kids first time seeing the ocean staying at the Alden. It has left a mark on them and we will be back every year.

“Each year the exceptional service of the Alden staff makes our vacation memorable!.”

Alden Suites Celebrates 50 Years with a 1969-Themed Celebration on St. Pete Beach

What a difference five decades can make. Fifty years after Robert and Gennifer Renfrow purchased a small motel on St. Pete Beach, the Alden Suites Beachfront Resort has evolved into a fully renovated, large-scale family resort featuring two pools, a hot tub, two tennis courts, a Cabana Beach Bar, two new all-suite towers and 6 newly modernized, upscale cottages. Under the ownership and impeccable stewardship of the Renfrow family, the independent, historic resort has delivered memorable travel experiences for 50 years, and the party is still underway!

The highlight of the celebration was the Alden Family Reunion, where longtime guests gathered from all over the world to celebrate the big anniversary.

On the Friday night before our #ALDENWOW50 Celebration at the Alden, we gathered with family and longtime guests at the Cabana Bar to kick off the weekend with a Suncoast Watersports Cruise and fun Karaoke Night. Chris and Dave held court at the Cabana Bar in their unique 50th Anniversary shirts, serving special commemorative cocktails.

The big celebration took place on November 9, a glorious fall evening in St. Pete Beach. Our beachfront lawn and volleyball court were transformed into a hippie wonderland, with colorful lights, flowers, and tie-dye everywhere. As guests arrived, Chris and Dave from the Cabana Bar welcomed them with cocktails, and guests took photos with Sky the VW Bus.

Island Flavors and Tings created the Ultimate Grazing Table, amazing guests with an incredible bounty of fresh fruits, homemade dips, charcuterie, cheese, and vegetables. They also had a smoker cooking up pulled pork, chicken, and ribs. Ward’s Seafood served up fresh crab, salmon, and shrimp out of fishing boats filled with ice. For dessert, guests enjoyed tie-dye cake pops and delicious cupcakes.

Gary Renfrow, President of Alden Suites Beachfront Resort, opened the celebration with a moving speech: “This celebration for the anniversary of Alden’s ownership by the Renfrow and Featherstone families was the brainchild of my wife Mary Ann, and she made it all happen along with our ad agency the AdGals. We’ve been celebrating all year long, and we are grateful to everyone who joined us in this commemoration.”

Mary Ann Renfrow thanked the guests and elected officials who joined us for the momentous event: “We’re so honored to have so many of our longtime guests who have entrusted us with all of the times of their lives spent here at the Alden. It really does mean something to our family to be such an important part of your life for many generations. I just met a baby who’s just a few weeks older than my new grandson, and his middle name is Alden. I can’t tell you the tears that brings to my eyes, so we’re very, very honored.”

“We could not have been successful in the past 50 years without having elected officials who understood the needs of small businesses like ours and the needs of our environment that contributes to our business to provide you with such a beautiful relaxing treasure of a place. We are joined by elected officials who have been longtime advocates for tourism, which is the number one industry in the state of Florida.”

Elected officials who joined in the festivities included:

  • Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch
  • Pinellas County Commissioner Charlie Justice
  • Pinellas County Commissioner Janet Long
  • Pinellas County Commissioner Pat Gerard
  • Mayor of St. Pete Beach Alan Johnson
  • St. Pete Beach Commissioner Terri Finnerty
  • St. Pete Beach Commissioner Ward Frizlowski

We were also joined by Jen Carlisle of Visit Florida and Robin Miller of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce. Mary Ann Renfrow said, “Every day they have been at the forefront of advocacy, working continuously to provide all of the guests that come to Pinellas County and St. Pete Beach with superior experiences. They help us as businesses recognize what we need to do to make this destination better and keep us relevant and keep guests wanting to return.”

Tony Satterfield, Vice President and General Manager of Alden Suites, noted: “There are literally thousands of beachfront hotels, all over the state of Florida. So, what makes the Alden different? It starts with ownership and my staff. Every day, my department sets very high standards, and then my employees carry it out. And I think at the end of the day, that’s what makes the Alden special. It starts at the top, and it starts with the Renfrows giving our staff everything necessary to succeed.”

Next, the Renfrows had a big surprise as Pinellas County Commissioner Charlie Justice took to the stage. He declared November 9, 2019, Alden Suites Day in Pinellas County. Commissioner Justice declared: “We absolutely love the Renfrow family, and we appreciate how they represent Pinellas County to our visitors. We appreciate how involved they are in the community. We appreciate that they’re good corporate citizens; they give back every single day. And we’re so proud to declare today. November 9, Alden Suites Day.”

After the speeches ended on this high note, it was time to PARTY! Messenger took to the stage and guests got their groove on, dancing to hits from the hippie era. It was a party for the ages that no one will ever forget. We’ve posted a few hundred pictures from the party on our Facebook page, feel free to check them out and see if we captured anyone you know!

We are so grateful to the many St. Pete Beach businesses who partnered with us to make our 50th Anniversary celebration a resounding success.

The #ALDENWOW50 Celebration Continues with a Blogger Bash!

Here at Alden Suites, we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary of ownership by the Renfrow family with exciting events all year long. This October, we brought in a group of influencers from across the USA to help us spread the word. Bloggers, Instagrammers, YouTubers, magazine writers and radio hosts joined together for a convivial gathering on St. Pete Beach.

It all started on Wednesday, October 16 with a party on the grassy lawn next to the beach. Dan Casey of Snappers grilled up drunken shrimp and filet mignon. Chris and Dave were on hand to mix up cocktails from our mobile bar cart. The influencers mixed and mingled, getting to know each other, and we heard from Leroy of Visit St. Pete Clearwater.

The party moved to the Cabana Bar as the sun set, and the group enjoyed an incredible dinner made by Odise Armata of St. Pete Beach Produce and Deli. Armata specializes in Mediterranean food and he makes everything from scratch. The bloggers RAVED about his decadent Spanakopita, creamy hummus, and fresh Vegan wraps. But it wasn’t all healthy- he also spoiled the group with his baklava, honey cakes and nutty wedding cookies. After dinner and drinks, the influencers settled into their beachfront suites and bungalows, with some choosing to gather at the hot tub and pool for a moonlight swim.

On Thursday morning, the group gathered for coffee and breakfast, generously provided by Chick fil A of St. Pete Beach, in the Fountain Courtyard Room. The whole group gathered for a photo op in the courtyard, and then headed out for a day on the beach. They set up camp in our signature yellow cabanas- some chose to relax all day, while others swam in the ocean and tried out the paddleboards and jetskis from Suncoast Water Sports.

Bloggers Miami Mermaid Elle and Vegan Disney Food were announced as the winners of the first night’s photo contest, and their prize was a parasailing excursion with Suncoast Water Sports. Neither of them had every tried parasailing before, and they had a blast! Everyone gathered at the Cabana Bar for Cuban Sandwiches and sweet potato fries served up by our Alden Oasis food truck.

After lunch, Miami Mermaid Elle wanted to experience the Alden’s sparkling saltwater pools, so we wheeled her over in a luggage trolley and she splashed right in. Lucky young guests were able to join her in the water, learning how to blow heart-shaped bubbles and swim like a mermaid. It was truly a magical moment!

Since we were celebrating 50 years of the Alden, we decided to glam it up with a 1980’s party at the Cabana Bar. Chris and Dave really got into the spirit in their Richard Simmons outfits! They served up special cocktails and 80’s music filled the air as our guests showed off their totally awesome getups. If you’re thinking of a special gathering for an Alden Suites girls weekend or family reunion, we highly recommend an 80’s party- it’s always a riot!

Next, it was time to set sail on a Suncoast Watersports sunset cruise. Our crew continued the 80’s party in style on the boat, capturing photos and delighting in the dancing dolphins that followed the boat all the way down the coastline to Pass a Grille. The Suncoast team kept the drinks flowing so the group could soak up the sunset and relax.

Dan and Connor Casey of Snapper’s Sea Grill welcomed us into their restaurant for a spectacular dinner. First they tempted palates with Tandoori Beef Satay, Zucchini Sticks and their creative watermelon with fried goat cheese stack. Our influencers had trouble choosing between the entrees, but the Filet of Beef Tenderloin, Wasabi Crusted Tuna and Coconut-Cashew Crusted Mahi-Mahi were some of their favorites. We were even spoiled with dessert: Flourless Chocolate Cake and Oreo-Crusted Key Lime Pie wrapped up the evening and sent everyone home full and happy.

In the morning, we sent the bloggers off with an extra surprise. Our friend Stephanie Frank brought her VW Bus named Sky, which has been lovingly restored and fitted with a donut board for breakfast parties. It was all very Instagrammable for our influencers, and they explored all the fun areas of the bus and enjoyed coffee and donuts before heading back to real life.

We are so grateful to the bloggers who joined us and we want to share the stories they wrote about their time with us here at the Alden. Here are the links if you’d like to check them out!

How to get in the 1969 spirit for our #ALDENWOW50 Anniversary Party!

If you’re lucky enough to be on the list for our November 9 Anniversary Party celebrating 50 years of the Alden, you’ll want to get in the spirit! Guests will be wearing 1969-themed outfits while enjoying our Summer of Love-themed decor and music.

1969 is a fun year since we were right on the cusp between go-go groovy outfits and flower child hippie style. Feel free to express the throwback theme in whatever way appeals to you.

Here are some things that went on in 1969, just to get you inspired:

  • The Beatles’ last public performance, on the roof of Apple Records .
  • Woodstock attracts more than 350,000 rock-n-roll fans
  • The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am muscle car is introduced
  • The Top Song was Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In by The 5th Dimension
  • Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon.
  • The price of gas was 35 cents per gallon
  • The first U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam
  • The average cost of a new house was $15,500
  • Box office hits included Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Midnight Cowboy and Valley of the Dolls
  • The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am muscle car is introduced
  • Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon.

One way to go is Mary Quant-style mod: mini-skirts with knee socks, platform shoes, pinafore dresses and short shift dresses. Mod men wore narrow pants and ties, patent leather shoes and vests.

And on the other side of the spectrum is beatnik style- personified by Jimi Hendrix and Jane Birkin. Bohemian looks like wide flare collars, bell-bottom pants, peasant tops, flower crowns, embroidered shirts and earthy jewelry bring out the hippie vibe. So whether you want to channel Ali McGraw, Cher, Stevie Nicks, George Harrison or John Lennon, 1969 is the year of freedom and fun!

If you need help finding a great 1969-themed costume, we recommend ARTPool Gallery in St. Petersburg. They have a full range of authentic, original 1969 clothing, plus hippie accessories to complete your look. Just tell them the look you are seeking and they will help you find the perfect outfit for you. Enjoy, and we’ll see you at the party!

Best Nightlife in St. Petersburg

From funky to swanky to chill, St. Petersburg’s nightlife scene truly does have something for everyone. Here are five of our favorite places to take a load off at the end a long day playing in the Sunshine City!

The Mandarin Hide

If you’re not looking for it, you just might miss it. Tucked away in a small storefront, The Mandarin Hide is the quintessential speakeasy. It boasts an impressive cocktail menu with Prohibition-era staples such as Tito’s Blind Pig, the Sidecar, the blue-tinted Aviation and, of course, their famous Moscow Mule, but if nothing on the menu suits your fancy, the bartender will happily whip you up a signature concoction just for you. The ambience is relaxing with a live music several times a week and it can be incredibly affordable with drink specials nightly. We highly recommend going on Test Kitchen Tuesdays when the staff curates a new list of gorgeously crafted cocktails for patrons to try every week!

Flûte & Dram

Want to feel fancy for the night without leaving with an empty wallet? You’ve come to the right place. St. Petersburg’s first champagne, caviar and whiskey bar opened just last year and boy, is it a welcome addition. This upscale bar is praised for its knowledgeable and friendly staff who are just as happy to accommodate dietary restrictions as they are to spend time with guests and educate them on the fine details of champagne and caviar. Flûte & Dram boasts the largest champagne collection in St. Petersburg and beautifully displays it on the shelves over its long marble bar—complementing the chic and cozy decor of the place. Always elegant but never pretentious, Flûte & Dram is the place to let your inner socialite shine!

Ruby’s Elixir

Ruby’s Elixir started as Central Cigars in the late 1990s and hasn’t forgotten its roots. The retro-chic speakeasy vibe is reminiscent of days past and adorned with 40s/50s flair. A home-away-from-home for both locals and tourists alike, Ruby’s is Downtown St. Petersburg’s longest running live music venue where you can hear jazz, blues, funk, rock and more from national and touring acts around the world and favorite local musicians on any given night. However, the main attraction here is St. Petersburg’s largest selection of premium cigars. Enjoy a smoke along with one of their specialty or classic drinks. This is a great place to chill after a long day having fun in the Florida sun!

The Ale & The Witch

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble, fire burn and brewskis bubble. The Witch & The Ale is known for its award-winning brews and weekly cask from America’s own great brewers. Their selection of 32 American craft beers are on constantly rotating taps. Follow them on Twitter to see their real-time updated tap list. The other reason both locals and tourists keep on coming back to this happy haunt is the wicked live music on almost every night of the week. Jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass and folk are just some of the styles you’ll hear performed by local singers and bands. Grab a seat in the courtyard outside, kick back, relax, and let The Witch work her magic!

Right Around the Corner – Arcade Brewery

Yes, you read that right. ‘80s nostalgia is huge right now and there’s no better place to indulge your inner gamer than at Right Around the Corner. This neighborhood craft beer brewery was founded just three years ago with three interests in mind: a comfortable atmosphere, delicious craft beer, and old school games galore.  Enjoy hand-picked beers from some of the best breweries in the world on eight rotating taps while you brush up on your pinball skills, throw some steel tip darts, crush your friends in foosball, or try to beat your high score in Pac-Man. If you’re looking for a fun place to hang out but still want a chill and low-key night, you’ve come to the right place. Game on!
