Old Florida Finds in St. Petersburg

Got a hankering for some vintage Americana? You’ve come to the right place! St. Petersburg has some hidden treasures that will immediately transport you back to the good ol’ days—without even needing a time machine!

Sunken Gardens

In the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, you’ll find St. Petersburg’s oldest living museum, the Sunken Gardens. This 100-year-old garden is a botanical paradise filled with cascading waterfalls, beautiful demonstration gardens, gorgeous flowers, and more than 50,000 tropical plants (some of which are the oldest in the region). Make sure to check out their animals, too, like their relaxing koi pond and their new flock of 20 fabulous flamingos which have joined George and Lucy—the two remaining Chilean flamings from the original flock that have been on exhibit since 1956.

Coney Island Grill

Come on down to the oldest family-owned restaurant in St. Petersburg! Coney Island Grill is the quintessential mom-and-pop restaurant. Sit on a stool at the old-school lunch counter and watch speedy short-order cooks serve up delicious burgers, hot dogs, chili dogs, fries and hand-dipped milkshakes. This St. Petersburg staple has been in business since 1926 when hot dogs were only a nickel and burgers were only a dime. Prices are a tiny bit higher than that today but we promise, your meal here will be worth every penny!

St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

In between Mirror Lake and the famous Coliseum Ballroom, you’ll find the oldest and largest shuffleboard club in the world with 32 lighted courts (65 total) and an amazing old grandstand. St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club was founded in 1924 and was neglected for years until 2005 when it started hosting Friday night games and 2008 when it underwent the ultimate revitalization. Now it’s a hotspot for people in their 20s and 30s and even college students who come to hang out, listen to live music and learn the game.

Candy Kitchen

No, this isn’t Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory—but it’s the closest you might just get! Candy Kitchen is an iconic landmark on Madeira Beach that has something to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. Founded in 1950, this family-owned business prides itself on making homemade ice cream, fudge, Italian ice, and selling nostalgic candy from your childhood. Generations of locals and visitors have ended their trips to “Mad Beach” with stops at this mom-and-pop shop, cooling themselves off with a simple scoop of ice cream or even the famous Big Mouth brownie ice cream sandwich.

Polynesian Putter

Drive just two minutes south of Alden Suites on Gulf Blvd and you’ll come across an Easter-Island-style moai head and a giant, green coiled snake. Welcome to Polynesian Putter, a classically retro 18-hole miniature golf course built-in 1966. This roadside attraction hasn’t changed much during the last 50 years, which is great, because the crazy statues that pay homage to the once-popular Tiki culture make it the perfect spot for Instagram photoshoots! Just don’t forget to address the ball. (“Hello, ball!”)

Things to Do with Toddlers in St. Pete Beach

We here at Alden Suites pride ourselves on being a family-friendly resort. We want to make sure guests of all ages are having a great time soaking up the sand, surf, and sun of St. Pete Beach. However, we know that it’s sometimes hard to find things everyone in the family wants to do. This is often especially difficult when traveling with toddlers. Therefore, we thought we’d put together a list of some of the best things to do during your vacation that’ll entertain and engage both you and your little ones.

If you want to spend some time in the water with your toddler(s) but don’t necessarily want to get them in the ocean just yet, we recommend checking out the St. Pete Beach Family Aquatic Center. This year-round heated/chilled facility consists of a six-lane Junior Olympic swimming pool and an attached children’s play area with several water features that spray, drop and squirt water. There’s also a mushroom-shaped waterfall and colorful dumping cones. Older kids can also enjoy two large tubular slides. This is a great place to sunbathe or even escape the hot sun under a shady umbrella.

Just outside of the Aquatic Center you’ll find Colonel Michael J. Horan Park. This park has a playground that’s perfect for kids of all ages and has great waterfront views (and breezes)! They even host free concerts and events like Trunk or Treat & Movie in the Park in October and Christmas in the Park with their very own Mistletoe Market in December. The entire Community Center complex is a short three-minute drive away from Alden Suites.

We love our neighbors over at RumFish Grill and toddlers are entranced by their incredible Swim With The Fishes experience. Their 33,500-gallon aquarium was built by Wayde King and Brett Raymer of Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (the rockstars from Animal Planet’s hit series TANKED) and features fish that are indigenous to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico like snook, grouper, tarpon, southern stingrays, and even a green moray eel. Swimmers ages 8 years old and up have the exclusive privilege of snorkeling in the tank in a program led by experts from the Marine Exploration Center. Parents with toddlers, however, can watch the snorkeling from the restaurant for free!

If you’d rather not leave the comfort of our resort, we have plenty of amenities and activities for your entire family to enjoy. Play a game of cornhole, hop aboard a kayak, strap into a parasail wing, relax on a sunset cruise, splash around in one of our two sparkling outdoor pools, or even build a sandcastle on our beautiful white sand beach. We’re here to ensure that every member of your family is having a vacation they’ll remember forever.

Sea Turtles and Bird Watching in St. Pete Beach

We have been getting a lot of surprise guests this month at the Alden! A couple of sea turtle nests on the beach nearby hatched during a storm a few days ago. With the wind, waves and extremely high tides, the little guys were confused about which way to swim. Chris and Dave, our superhero bartenders, escorted this little guy out into the Gulf, and he swam away to safety. Our Alden Suites guests have been getting in on the action, joining our team in turtle rescues on the beach.

And speaking of Florida wildlife, bird watching is one of the most relaxing and fascinating hobbies around. St. Pete Beach is full of unique sea birds you won’t find on the mainland. The best times to see these Floridian birds are in mornings and evenings since they are most active during those times.

Children, beautiful boy brothers, watching and feeding seagulls on the beach on sunset

You can visit one of this area’s many natures preserves but there are also so many beautiful birds you can see right at our doorstep here at the Alden. Here are just a few the sea birds you can look forward to seeing during your stay in St. Pete Beach.

white ibis st pete beach

The White Ibis is one bird you will see often on our beaches probing the sand for food. With a white and red face with a curved, red bill and long spindly legs, the White Ibis is truly a sight to see.

The Royal Tern is a bird you will see in droves on our sandy shores. They almost look like penguins or parrots, with dramatic black and white features and a black and orange beak. It is very common to see them gathered in large nests protecting their eggs and young. So approach with caution.

Herons and Egrets are a well know Floridian symbol. These long-legged wonders come in different shapes and sizes spend time on the shores of St. Pete Beach. Pictured here we have a white heron and a grey heron, two of the most common species we have on our beaches.

If you hear cackling on the beach this is the culprit. The laughing gull is a seaside staple named for its laugh-like call. They can be easily identified by their black head and red bill so, if you see one, make sure to tell it a joke for us!

The Willet is a large and spindly shorebird mostly in marshes and dunes. You’ll usually see them in small flocks, alone or in pairs. These guys are quick and skittish so make sure to approach them slowly when trying to snap a pic.

The sandwich tern is a medium-sized bird and the only of its species to have a black yellow-tipped bill. You can usually catch this stunning bird in large groups during nesting season on the sandbars of St. Pete. These guys are also excellent hunters and if you’re lucky you can catch them hovering above the water up to thirty feet high before diving gracefully to grab a fish.

And of course, we can never resist watching pelicans as they torpedo out of the sky to dive into the surf and fill their beaks with fish. We have lots of pelicans around the Alden, and our youngest guests always get so excited to see them. We loved sharing some of our favorite seabirds with you! If you have any flighty friends you enjoy seeing on our Alden Suites beaches share them with us in the comments!

The Llewellyn Family Shares their Story of 26 Years at the Alden!

The Llewellyn/Rychak Family Reunion would like to offer the warmest congratulations to the Alden Resort on its 50th anniversary. In fact, our group which usually numbers around 30 to 50 attendees has celebrated over half of those 50 years at the Alden. This summer we gathered at the Alden for our 26th annual week-long reunion. And we already have our dates set for our 27th in 2020!

Our annual reunion at the Alden officially started in 1994 when we had friends and relatives from all over the country attend a surprise 40th-anniversary party for our parents. But the background actually started in 1992 when some family met on the east coast of Florida in Melbourne Beach where we had rented a beachfront multifamily house. We quickly realized that we would need a bigger place to host a reunion and the east coast waves were just too rough for the elderly and children. There was also a lot of misery causing sand fleas and mosquitos to contend with on the east coast which has never been a problem at the Alden beach. That’s worth the price of admission right there!

In 1993 my sister Katherine and I were visiting family who live in St Pete. We decided to look for a suitable place in the area to hold our desired large family reunion so we literally walked the sand from a south section of St Pete Beach north looking for just the right place. Nothing really struck our fancy until we reached the Alden. We immediately recognized it for the gem it is. It was like love at first sight and we kicked off our tradition the following year! The Alden offered everything we could hope for. It has a relaxing and laid back vibe to it in a beautiful tropical setting. It is very attractive and comfortable without being pretentious. Family-run and family-friendly with a variety of room types to fit all tastes with very competitive pricing. It has the added attraction of suites being more like apartments than a hotel room, with separate sleeping areas and a kitchenette.

Food, drink, and supplies are on the premises or within easy walking distance. With so many amenities like gulf front views and balconies, continually updated rooms, two pools, spa, tropical landscaping, beach cabanas, BBQ deck, volleyball, shuffleboard, basketball hoop, ping pong, tennis courts, etc. there is always something to do and enjoy. In all those years I never heard one child (or adult) say they were bored. In fact, no one wants to leave! Best of all, this wonderful resort fronts the beautiful white sandy beach and calm, warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s hard to imagine a more serene and satisfying slice of paradise while spending time with loved ones on the grounds, in the water or walking the beach enjoying a gorgeous sunset while watching some dolphins cruise by!

Another wonderful aspect of the Alden is the staff. They are always ready to accommodate with their friendly, efficient and professional services. Some of them have been there so long that they are like an extended family that we see every year. And speaking of family and friends, that is really what it is all about. Being able to relax and enjoy such beautiful surroundings with friends and relatives is priceless. One of the greatest things about our annual event is that we got to spend time with people that have since passed on that we would not have had the opportunity otherwise. Adults have grown older together while children have grown up and now bring their own families. In fact, we have had 5 generations of the family attend over the years. The memories and time spent together in such beautiful surroundings are truly priceless!

In closing and on behalf of the Llewellyn/Rychak Family and Friends Reunion we again congratulate the Alden on its 50th anniversary! We are all very thankful for the opportunity that the Alden has provided our group and for all of our events and memories over the last 26 years and counting. Whether it is for a reunion, a family or just a couple’s getaway, we encourage everyone who hasn’t visited the Alden to do so and enjoy the wonderful experience that so many of us have already had.

Sincerely,

Jim Llewellyn

Join the #ALDENWOW50 Family Reunion this November!

Fifty years ago in 1969, Robert and Gennifer Renfrow purchased a small beachfront motel called the Alden. The Renfrow family still proudly owns and operates the Alden Suites Beachfront Resort and we are celebrating this major milestone with a year-long Golden Anniversary campaign. We kicked off the year with some major philanthropic giving, supporting our local community with large donations and hands-on work to make St. Pete Beach a better place.

Earlier this year, we shared the story of how the Alden grew from a beachside motel to the full-service resort that she is today. Our celebratory video series has taken guests on a trip through the way-back machine to the Alden in the 1960’s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Guests are sharing their stories all year round through our #ALDENWOW50 social media campaign, plus we’ve unveiled a new mural and lots of special Golden Giveaways. It all leads up to the big Alden Family Reunion set for November 9, where longtime guests will gather from all over the world to celebrate the big anniversary.

The theme of the party will be “Summer of Love”, and we’ll all be decked out in our hippie-inspired best: bell bottoms, embroidered shirts, headbands, and trippy tie-dye. We’ll have a VW van full of treats, delicious food and drinks, and 1960’s inspired decor. The band “Messenger” will play live music from the 1960s to the present day, and we’ll dance and celebrate into the night with Alden guests and supporters who’ve become a part of the family.

Want to join us for our 50th Anniversary Celebration on  November 9th?

Now you can win a free trip, including two nights at the Alden, a $500 Southwest Airlines gift card, and tickets to the big bash. All you have to do is share a story about your Alden Suites vacation.

If you want to make SURE you can be here for the party, there’s still time to book your weekend at the Alden to celebrate our big anniversary? We’re offering a 25% discount for bookings from November 8-10 for the big party weekend. There are fewer than 30 rooms still available, so make your reservations now!

Where to Exercise While Staying at Alden Suites

While you’re freeing yourself from your daily routine by staying at Alden Suites, you don’t have to leave your workout at home. While staying with us here in St. Pete Beach there are plenty of ways to keep your body and mind in balance with your regular workout, or by switching it up with a new routine.

If you’re looking to get your exercise during your Alden Suites vacation, here are a few suggestions to stay fit while enjoying your new surroundings:

  • Beach and Water Sports. Suncoast Watersports is located right behind the resort and offers snorkeling, kayak & paddle board rentals! Get in a great workout while taking an adventure exploring St. Pete Beach.
  • Walking on the Beach. Walking in soft sand is a major workout and burns twice as many calories than walking on flat ground. Enjoy the view while getting in some exercise and switching up your normal routine!
  • Beach Volleyball. Guests love our beach volleyball courts- bring your crew of family and friends for a friendly match in the sand. Beach volleyball burns 750 calories per hour, so you’ll be able to enjoy some of our famous Cabana Bar cocktails and still look great in that bathing suit!
  • Beach Run: If you’re looking to get a good run in off the sand there are many beautiful scenic locations with paved run routes. Check out: Treasure Island Beach Trail (The trail runs about a mile and starts at the County Park Beach Access at 104th Avenue and ends at the Marriott Hotel near 120th Avenue, to the north.) or St. Petersburg Waterfront Parks (23 blocks along Tampa Bay in downtown St Pete.)

  • Tennis. Here at the Alden, we have two lighted regulation-sized tennis courts atop our parking garage. Bring along your tennis rackets, balls, and shoes so you’ll be ready for a match in the sunshine. Singles tennis burns 420 calories per hour, so you’ll have room for a delicious grouper sandwich at our food truck!
  • Beach Bike Ride: Suncoast Watersports, located right behind the Alden Suites resort, also offers bike rentals. Ride alongside the gorgeous St. Pete Beach waves while getting a great cardio workout!
  • Offsite Workout Facilities: Alden Suites has an agreement with a local gym just a few blocks away. Just visit our front desk to get your guest pass and you can pump iron and use cardio machines to your heart’s content.
  • Swim Laps: Alden Suites offers access to two sparkling outdoor pools, which are heated to the perfect temperature all year around. Get your cardio in while making a splash by swimming laps!
