How to Save Money on a St. Pete Beach Vacation

St. Pete Beach has so many activities and attractions to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to spend time by the ocean or hide away from the heat, there are tons of options for you and your family that won’t have you leaving with an empty wallet. A vacation here doesn’t have to break the bank if you know how and where you can save money. Here are just a few activities that are just as fun as they are affordable!

Surf, Sand & Sea

One of of the biggest reasons tourists come back year after year is the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Gulf. It doesn’t cost anything to lay out on our white sugar sand beaches and listen to the sound of the waves. There are a few beaches that require you to pay for parking but, luckily, staying at the Alden gives you direct access to four gorgeous acres of private beachfront—so no transportation required! Looking for something more tailored to you? Spend time on family-friendly shores with kids’ actives and playgrounds, get your adrenaline pumping on a remote beach with hiking and biking trails, or choose a romantic spot featuring a waterfront restaurant. St. Pete’s beaches are as versatile as they are relaxing.

Soak up the Sun

The best show to watch here doesn’t even require admission. St. Pete is known for our incredible sunsets. (Don’t believe us? Check out some fabulous shots our guests have captured over on our Instagram.) It’s absolutely worth it to adjust your schedule so that you have time to catch them when you’re near the ocean which, at Alden, is all the time! Some folks even sacrifice sleep to catch the equally breathtaking sunrises over on the east side of Gulf Blvd. Day or night, make sure your phone is handy so you can capture the magnificent beauty. There’s nothing like seeing the sky awash in color and the sun sinking into or escaping the horizon.

Wild, Winged Wonders

Spend a day at the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, the largest nonprofit wild bird hospital and sanctuary in the United States. This place, located just 24 minutes away from Alden, admits up to 10,000 injured birds annually. That means, 365 days a year, you have the chance to see species like owls, pelicans, and rare woodpeckers, among many other permanently injured birds, living here in this beachfront paradise. Stroll through the 1.5-acre sanctuary, learn about birds and avian medicine in the education center and enjoy the breathtaking view on the observation tower—all for the low cost of nothing (although donations are greatly appreciated)! Special presentations are hosted daily, so make sure to check the website before you visit.

America’s #1 Beach

Back in 2005, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, awarded that title to Fort DeSoto Park—located just 27 minutes south of Alden Suites. Fort DeSoto has seven miles of powder-white sandy beaches, more than a thousand unspoiled acres and all the amenities you can imagine. There’s an extensive walking, biking and rollerblading trail, nature trails with free guided tours and a historic fort dating back to the Spanish-American War. You’ll also find plenty of picnic areas, restrooms and water fountains, play areas and even a snack bar. Want to get on the water and see some manatees? Guests can rent canoes or kayaks for a trip through the mangroves. While there is no charge to enter the park, you will need to pay 85 cents in tolls to get there—a small price for the exposure to classic American history and an escape from the norm.

The Mouse’s Favorite Wine

The only citrus winery in the state happens to also be the only Florida winery invited to participate in Disney’s Epcot International Food and Wine Festival for the last 15 years. Florida Orange Groves Winery is family-owned and produces over 43 different tropical, citrus, berry and even vegetable wines—many unique to Florida—all of which are made 100% from the juice as indicated by their bottle label. The winery houses a free tasting bar and gives free tours on the half hour starting at 10am Monday through Sunday and starting at 12:30pm on Sunday until 4pm each day. The best part—it’s only a six-minute drive from Alden Suites!

Test Your Culinary Skills

Along with free wi-fi, flat screen TVs and large closets, all suites are equipped with refrigerators, cooktops, microwaves, cookware, dishes, coffeemakers and utensils. Utilizing your in-suite kitchen is a great way to cut back on costs. Grab some fresh seafood and shellfish (along with tasty seasonings and spices) at Key West Shrimp Co or just head on over to Publix if you’re looking for a larger and more familiar selection. If you’re staying with us from October to May, we also highly recommend visiting the Corey Avenue Sunday Market for homemade produce, take home foods, ready to eat lunch bites and so much more. Book a room with us now and get a suite for the price of a room with zero resort fees!

Best Nightlife in St. Petersburg

From funky to swanky to chill, St. Petersburg’s nightlife scene truly does have something for everyone. Here are five of our favorite places to take a load off at the end a long day playing in the Sunshine City!

The Mandarin Hide

If you’re not looking for it, you just might miss it. Tucked away in a small storefront, The Mandarin Hide is the quintessential speakeasy. It boasts an impressive cocktail menu with Prohibition-era staples such as Tito’s Blind Pig, the Sidecar, the blue-tinted Aviation and, of course, their famous Moscow Mule, but if nothing on the menu suits your fancy, the bartender will happily whip you up a signature concoction just for you. The ambience is relaxing with a live music several times a week and it can be incredibly affordable with drink specials nightly. We highly recommend going on Test Kitchen Tuesdays when the staff curates a new list of gorgeously crafted cocktails for patrons to try every week!

Flûte & Dram

Want to feel fancy for the night without leaving with an empty wallet? You’ve come to the right place. St. Petersburg’s first champagne, caviar and whiskey bar opened just last year and boy, is it a welcome addition. This upscale bar is praised for its knowledgeable and friendly staff who are just as happy to accommodate dietary restrictions as they are to spend time with guests and educate them on the fine details of champagne and caviar. Flûte & Dram boasts the largest champagne collection in St. Petersburg and beautifully displays it on the shelves over its long marble bar—complementing the chic and cozy decor of the place. Always elegant but never pretentious, Flûte & Dram is the place to let your inner socialite shine!

Ruby’s Elixir

Ruby’s Elixir started as Central Cigars in the late 1990s and hasn’t forgotten its roots. The retro-chic speakeasy vibe is reminiscent of days past and adorned with 40s/50s flair. A home-away-from-home for both locals and tourists alike, Ruby’s is Downtown St. Petersburg’s longest running live music venue where you can hear jazz, blues, funk, rock and more from national and touring acts around the world and favorite local musicians on any given night. However, the main attraction here is St. Petersburg’s largest selection of premium cigars. Enjoy a smoke along with one of their specialty or classic drinks. This is a great place to chill after a long day having fun in the Florida sun!

The Ale & The Witch

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble, fire burn and brewskis bubble. The Witch & The Ale is known for its award-winning brews and weekly cask from America’s own great brewers. Their selection of 32 American craft beers are on constantly rotating taps. Follow them on Twitter to see their real-time updated tap list. The other reason both locals and tourists keep on coming back to this happy haunt is the wicked live music on almost every night of the week. Jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass and folk are just some of the styles you’ll hear performed by local singers and bands. Grab a seat in the courtyard outside, kick back, relax, and let The Witch work her magic!

Right Around the Corner – Arcade Brewery

Yes, you read that right. ‘80s nostalgia is huge right now and there’s no better place to indulge your inner gamer than at Right Around the Corner. This neighborhood craft beer brewery was founded just three years ago with three interests in mind: a comfortable atmosphere, delicious craft beer, and old school games galore.  Enjoy hand-picked beers from some of the best breweries in the world on eight rotating taps while you brush up on your pinball skills, throw some steel tip darts, crush your friends in foosball, or try to beat your high score in Pac-Man. If you’re looking for a fun place to hang out but still want a chill and low-key night, you’ve come to the right place. Game on!

Old Florida Finds in St. Petersburg

Got a hankering for some vintage Americana? You’ve come to the right place! St. Petersburg has some hidden treasures that will immediately transport you back to the good ol’ days—without even needing a time machine!

Sunken Gardens

In the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, you’ll find St. Petersburg’s oldest living museum, the Sunken Gardens. This 100-year-old garden is a botanical paradise filled with cascading waterfalls, beautiful demonstration gardens, gorgeous flowers, and more than 50,000 tropical plants (some of which are the oldest in the region). Make sure to check out their animals, too, like their relaxing koi pond and their new flock of 20 fabulous flamingos which have joined George and Lucy—the two remaining Chilean flamings from the original flock that have been on exhibit since 1956.

Coney Island Grill

Come on down to the oldest family-owned restaurant in St. Petersburg! Coney Island Grill is the quintessential mom-and-pop restaurant. Sit on a stool at the old-school lunch counter and watch speedy short-order cooks serve up delicious burgers, hot dogs, chili dogs, fries and hand-dipped milkshakes. This St. Petersburg staple has been in business since 1926 when hot dogs were only a nickel and burgers were only a dime. Prices are a tiny bit higher than that today but we promise, your meal here will be worth every penny!

St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

In between Mirror Lake and the famous Coliseum Ballroom, you’ll find the oldest and largest shuffleboard club in the world with 32 lighted courts (65 total) and an amazing old grandstand. St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club was founded in 1924 and was neglected for years until 2005 when it started hosting Friday night games and 2008 when it underwent the ultimate revitalization. Now it’s a hotspot for people in their 20s and 30s and even college students who come to hang out, listen to live music and learn the game.

Candy Kitchen

No, this isn’t Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory—but it’s the closest you might just get! Candy Kitchen is an iconic landmark on Madeira Beach that has something to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. Founded in 1950, this family-owned business prides itself on making homemade ice cream, fudge, Italian ice, and selling nostalgic candy from your childhood. Generations of locals and visitors have ended their trips to “Mad Beach” with stops at this mom-and-pop shop, cooling themselves off with a simple scoop of ice cream or even the famous Big Mouth brownie ice cream sandwich.

Polynesian Putter

Drive just two minutes south of Alden Suites on Gulf Blvd and you’ll come across an Easter-Island-style moai head and a giant, green coiled snake. Welcome to Polynesian Putter, a classically retro 18-hole miniature golf course built-in 1966. This roadside attraction hasn’t changed much during the last 50 years, which is great, because the crazy statues that pay homage to the once-popular Tiki culture make it the perfect spot for Instagram photoshoots! Just don’t forget to address the ball. (“Hello, ball!”)

Four Fine Dining Restaurants You Can Walk to from the Alden!

Staying at Alden Suites you have already made the wise choice of being comfortable, taken care of and you’ll still have a vacation budget to indulge. We want to make sure you enjoy whichever occasion you’re celebrating with us, and that you eat well! We’d love to share some of our favorite restaurants for your special dinner out and they are all within a mile of Alden Suites! Alden Suites is conveniently located on the beach with lots of choices for shopping, dining out and entertainment, but if you’re looking for something a little more special, we’ve got you covered! If you’re finding it hard to celebrate a special meal that doesn’t feel like you fell into a tourist trap with a menu that’s mostly fried, we suggest these 4 amazing restaurants to indulge and escape from the ordinary.

Snappers Sea Grill

Right across the street from the Alden is a wonderfully romantic restaurant called Snappers. The romantic ambiance and personalized service at Snappers set the scene for a truly special meal. Snappers is famed for their stuffed grouper, dry aged steaks, and blue tuna appetizer, and we’re totally addicted to their hand-cut fried zucchini sticks! Don’t forget to try their house-made desserts, the perfect accompaniment to a delicious celebration!

Fetishes Dining & Wine Bar

Fetishes offers an intimate and cozy setting with tableside service that makes the whole experience like no other. They have a garden out back where guests can see the fresh herbs used to make their meals. With dishes like duck a l’orange, steak Diane (cooked tableside) and their famous crab cakes accompanied by a thoughtfully selected and reasonably priced wine list, we know you’ll enjoy your night out!

Seared 1200 Chophouse

If the way to your love’s heart is steak, Seared 1200 Chophouse holds the key. Set in a refurbished 1940’s home along the intercoastal waterway just across the street from the Alden, 1200 Chophouse elevates steak to an art form, with incredible side dishes and a wine list to match. The flavor combinations and presentation will have you visually stimulated while you savor every bite! The truffle fries with gouda dipping sauce and seared duck breast are not to be missed. .
