Win an Alden Vacation and a Trip to the NEW Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center!

Have you visited St. Petersburg’s new Pier yet? Not only is it a fabulous dining and entertainment district, but it’s also the home to the brand-new Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center! Developed and operated by Tampa Bay Watch, a non-profit founded in 1993, the Discovery Center tells you the story of Tampa Bay’s vast and complex estuary — its history and recovery, and Tampa Bay Watch’s pivotal role in that effort. Next time you’re here at the Alden, make plans to take a short drive to downtown St. Pete and check out our newest attraction.

The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is the place to go for an entertaining, hands-on experience. We ALL love the Tampa Bay beaches, and there’s a reason why our water is so clear and our sand is so pure and white. Find out all you need to know about Tampa Bay’s unique ecosystem, right in the middle of it all! Tampa Bay Watch has been working for over 30 years to clean up our shorelines, and they do it in very unique ways. The Discovery Center’s Estuary Habitat and Touch Tank are key to understanding how the whole ecosystem works together- showcasing a variety of species found in Tampa Bay waters.

If you’re looking for a rainy-day family outing in St. Pete, the Discovery Center is just the ticket.  But the Discovery Center is not strictly an indoor experience. They also have a cool “wet classroom” with an amphitheater-style observation deck that hosts outdoor demonstrations.

The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is a perfect family activity for visitors to St. Pete Beach, and it also plays host to a variety of fun and educational events. Science Saturdays, Squid Encounters, and Adult Trivia nights are just a few of the featured activities that visitors to the Discovery Center can look forward to in the coming months. Click here to see all the fun coming your way!

The Alden is a proud sponsor of Tampa Bay Watch, having donated tens of thousands of dollars to the nonprofit over the last few years. We’re so excited to finally have a concrete way for our guests to experience the Watch’s vital work for themselves. That’s why we’re offering a special contest to award one lucky family with a Family Fun Day at the Discovery Center!

AND NOW, IT’S YOUR CHANCE TO WIN!

We’re teaming up with the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center to give away an amazing prize. Here’s how to enter:

On Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, share a photo or two of how YOUR family helps keep our planet healthy. Whether it’s recycling at home, picking up trash, drinking from reusable water bottles, or volunteering with a local environmental group, we want to see what you’re up to! Make sure to use the hashtags #dawnofdiscovery #aldenwow and #aldendiscovery and to post publicly so we can see your picture!

We will pick one person to win a Family Fun Day gift basket that will include these two adorable plushies, a Tampa Bay Watch hat, 4 Tampa Bay Watch bandannas, a family 4-pack of tickets to the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, and a 2-night stay at the Alden.

Mary Ann Renfrow, the Alden’s Director of Community Relations, will announce the contest winner LIVE on Facebook on Monday, September 28. So get to saving the planet and sharing your stories today!

45 Years of Alden Family Fun!

It’s always a joy to connect with our longtime guests! After a recent visit to the Alden, the Griscom family sent us this letter and some priceless vintage photos:

We have loved coming to the Alden for many years, and have lots of memories there.  We’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, 4th of July fireworks on the beach, Thanksgivings with shipped in turkey and trimmings, Christmases (yes, we would bring our own artificial decorated tree!), New Year’s Eves and days, UT bowl games, spring training baseball weeks…..just about any reason or excuse to come!
Now, I did promise to show you some photos…..it took a while to go through so many years’ worth, but I picked only 4 photos that would also incorporate the Alden.

June 1977….our oldest son (he’s now 44 years old) takes his first steps near the bungalows.

July 1984….all five Griscoms, including our one-year-old twins in the pool.  Neither pool had been fenced at that time, and the deck around this pool was a pea gravel decking (not very barefoot friendly!)

November 1986….we celebrated Thanksgiving!  Pictured here are our three-year-old twins on the beach with the “grey” Alden in the background.  Everyone was glad when it was returned to yellow.

July 2005….this was the last time we were all together at the Alden, here at the Cabana Bar.  Our kids were all grown up and it was, at last, a relaxing vacation with them.  Since then they have gotten multiple college degrees, gone into professions that have given them real independence, moved around the country (and the world) to follow their professions, and provided us with our only (so far!) grandchild. But our goal for 2021 is to get them all together, plus the families that they have added, for an Alden week!!!
As we mentioned there will be no trip for us in October, new baby on the way.  On our drive home, we decided it may be late January or early February, so maybe we’ll see you again.
Thanks,

Marion and Tom Griscom
Chattanooga, TN

Arrowhead Nature Trail

All Year Long

Explore several coastal habitats on the Arrowhead Nature Trail at Fort De Soto Park, an interpretive walk with plenty of stops where you’ll learn all about the salt-dependent plants along the rim of Mullet Key Bayou.  Openings between the mangroves enable you to enjoy scenic views with a wide sweep of the shallows of the bay, where dolphin and manatee might be cruising just offshore.

The trail can be a bit squishy underfoot as you draw near to the coast, and it’s important that you follow the signs or directions so you don’t walk in circles! Still, this easy 1.4 mile network of trails offers a great overview of the flora and fauna of the Gulf Coast. https://floridahikes.com/fortdesotoarrowhead

We hope you enjoy the new events this month at the Alden! If you have any suggestions of more great things to do in St. Pete Beach, please leave a comment below!

How to Save Money on a St. Pete Beach Vacation

St. Pete Beach has so many activities and attractions to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to spend time by the ocean or hide away from the heat, there are tons of options for you and your family that won’t have you leaving with an empty wallet. A vacation here doesn’t have to break the bank if you know how and where you can save money. Here are just a few activities that are just as fun as they are affordable!

Surf, Sand & Sea

One of of the biggest reasons tourists come back year after year is the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Gulf. It doesn’t cost anything to lay out on our white sugar sand beaches and listen to the sound of the waves. There are a few beaches that require you to pay for parking but, luckily, staying at the Alden gives you direct access to four gorgeous acres of private beachfront—so no transportation required! Looking for something more tailored to you? Spend time on family-friendly shores with kids’ actives and playgrounds, get your adrenaline pumping on a remote beach with hiking and biking trails, or choose a romantic spot featuring a waterfront restaurant. St. Pete’s beaches are as versatile as they are relaxing.

Soak up the Sun

The best show to watch here doesn’t even require admission. St. Pete is known for our incredible sunsets. (Don’t believe us? Check out some fabulous shots our guests have captured over on our Instagram.) It’s absolutely worth it to adjust your schedule so that you have time to catch them when you’re near the ocean which, at Alden, is all the time! Some folks even sacrifice sleep to catch the equally breathtaking sunrises over on the east side of Gulf Blvd. Day or night, make sure your phone is handy so you can capture the magnificent beauty. There’s nothing like seeing the sky awash in color and the sun sinking into or escaping the horizon.

Wild, Winged Wonders

Spend a day at the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, the largest nonprofit wild bird hospital and sanctuary in the United States. This place, located just 24 minutes away from Alden, admits up to 10,000 injured birds annually. That means, 365 days a year, you have the chance to see species like owls, pelicans, and rare woodpeckers, among many other permanently injured birds, living here in this beachfront paradise. Stroll through the 1.5-acre sanctuary, learn about birds and avian medicine in the education center and enjoy the breathtaking view on the observation tower—all for the low cost of nothing (although donations are greatly appreciated)! Special presentations are hosted daily, so make sure to check the website before you visit.

America’s #1 Beach

Back in 2005, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, awarded that title to Fort DeSoto Park—located just 27 minutes south of Alden Suites. Fort DeSoto has seven miles of powder-white sandy beaches, more than a thousand unspoiled acres and all the amenities you can imagine. There’s an extensive walking, biking and rollerblading trail, nature trails with free guided tours and a historic fort dating back to the Spanish-American War. You’ll also find plenty of picnic areas, restrooms and water fountains, play areas and even a snack bar. Want to get on the water and see some manatees? Guests can rent canoes or kayaks for a trip through the mangroves. While there is no charge to enter the park, you will need to pay 85 cents in tolls to get there—a small price for the exposure to classic American history and an escape from the norm.

The Mouse’s Favorite Wine

The only citrus winery in the state happens to also be the only Florida winery invited to participate in Disney’s Epcot International Food and Wine Festival for the last 15 years. Florida Orange Groves Winery is family-owned and produces over 43 different tropical, citrus, berry and even vegetable wines—many unique to Florida—all of which are made 100% from the juice as indicated by their bottle label. The winery houses a free tasting bar and gives free tours on the half hour starting at 10am Monday through Sunday and starting at 12:30pm on Sunday until 4pm each day. The best part—it’s only a six-minute drive from Alden Suites!

Test Your Culinary Skills

Along with free wi-fi, flat screen TVs and large closets, all suites are equipped with refrigerators, cooktops, microwaves, cookware, dishes, coffeemakers and utensils. Utilizing your in-suite kitchen is a great way to cut back on costs. Grab some fresh seafood and shellfish (along with tasty seasonings and spices) at Key West Shrimp Co or just head on over to Publix if you’re looking for a larger and more familiar selection. If you’re staying with us from October to May, we also highly recommend visiting the Corey Avenue Sunday Market for homemade produce, take home foods, ready to eat lunch bites and so much more. Book a room with us now and get a suite for the price of a room with zero resort fees!

7 Ways to Celebrate Mom this Mother’s Day

We all want to celebrate mom this Mother’s Day but with the current situation, many of us will be unable to take Mom out to the usual Mother’s Day dinner. The Alden is OPEN and we are excited to celebrate with many families this year. But going out is not the only way we can show our mothers how much we care! Here are some ways to show our moms love from our homes or in places safe to celebrate while social distancing.

A tried-and-true classic: Breakfast in bed. Make mom feel like she’s in a five-star hotel with an indulgent experience! Here’s a great fluffy pancake recipe you could try. Toss in some chocolate chips or mom’s favorite fruit for a real treat. https://www.africanbites.com/fluffy-pancakes/

Dress up some old mason jars with this tutorial from Home Stories A to Z. Mom is always looking for the best ways to display photos of her kids, and these are colorful options that she’ll love. https://www.homestoriesatoz.com/crafts/mason-jar-picture-frame-vase.html?ref=pcrorganicgglunkwn&prid=pcseogglunkwn

Looking for some fun Florida nature to explore with Mom?  Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is a wonderful place to walk, run, learn and explore! Hike with your family through clearly marked paths and enjoy a bird sanctuary and lots of local wildlife!

Set up a salon at home to give mom a much-needed mani/pedi. Not sure where to start? Here are 10 steps to getting the perfect manicure at home.

https://www.glamour.com/gallery/10-steps-to-the-perfect-at-home-manicure

Send a silly video Record a mini clip of you reciting a mini poem about mom, singing her favorite song or just listing all of her best qualities. Grandmothers love seeing fun videos of their grandkids, so don’t forget to include them in the script.

The Pinning Mama has finally found a great use for the stubs of old crayons. Help your little ones follow these careful instructions to create a colorful candle for Mom. The best part is watching them choose which colors she’ll love most.

https://www.thepinningmama.com/diy-crayon-candles/?ref=pcrorganicgglunkwn&prid=pcseogglunkwn

Looking for a perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day virtually? Set up an online call for your mom with friends, family, and siblings. Your mom would be thrilled if she sat down in front of her computer on Mother’s Day and discovered you arranged a Zoom or FaceTime call with her family and favorite friends!

We hope this list helps you celebrate mom this Mother’s Day. If you have any suggestions leave them in the comments here!

Best Local Wine Bars in St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach

St. Petersburg, Florida is well known for its thriving beer scene: with 35+ local craft breweries offering artisanal beers brewed on-site, there’s no wonder we’re nicknamed the Gulp Coast! However, wine is no doubt having its own moment here. Recently, several new wine bar concepts have popped up and we’ve compiled a list of the best. Here are some of our favorite local wine bars that would make Dionysus proud!

Sola Bistro & Wine Bar

Just a few blocks away from the Alden is a St. Pete Beach favorite: Sola Bistro & Wine Bar. This European-style wine bar brings in an eclectic mix of wine from the world’s greatest winemaking regions. They pair the vino with a killer selection of tapas, including Figs & Chorizo, Pork Belly, and an Italian spin on shrimp and grits called Shrimp & Polenta. Cheese lovers will adore their generous Cheese & Charcuterie boards. ((HINT)): if you want to hang out with Chris and Dave of the Alden Cabana Bar, they can often be found here after work!

Lolita’s Wine Market

The great thing about Lolita’s (named after the owners’ precious rescue dog, Lola) is that it has a little bit of everything. It’s a wine bar meets coffee shop that features CYO (Create Your Own) charcuterie platters with an ever-changing assortment of cheeses, meats and accoutrements, Spanish/Mediterranean-inspired tapas and even a few local brews for non-wine lovers to enjoy! It’s quickly become a local favorite for its great and affordable boutique wine selection and eclectic menu that focuses on fresh products. Sit down and relax and make some new friends or take your food and wine to go and enjoy a gorgeous beach sunset or movie in a park.

COPA

Located in the heart of Downtown St. Petersburg’s Edge District, COPA is a middle-ground for wine and beer lovers alike and boasts an impressive selection of small plates inspired by flavors from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia. Try their signature spirit-based cocktails and pair them up with their various world-infused tapas. COPA offers inside seating at private tables or in their lounge or bar and outside seating in their upscale outdoor lunge or at a private table. They also have space for patio hookah on buzzing Central Avenue! COPA is perfect for anyone looking for an upbeat environment without the congestion of late-night experience.

Annata Wine Bar

North Straub Park is located just steps from the downtown waterfront and features scenic views, a recreation trail, a stage for varied entertainment and nearly 5 acres of lush landscaping. Just steps away from it is Annata—a restaurant and wine bar that welcome you to enjoy contemporary cuisine, warm hospitality, and unparalleled service. Their menu reflects a mix of fine dishes from Italy and abroad with local ingredients sourced from their relationships with bay area farms and suppliers. Stop by and enjoy their incredible wine selection and even more impressive charcuterie boards!

Try Wine

Situated on the first level of a mixed-use high-rise building on Beach Drive, Try Wine features 88 ever-changing self serve wine by the glass selections that can be dispensed in 3 different sizes (a taste, half glass, or full glass) from the many wine vending machines located in their tasting room. Discover something new and further your wine education or grab a table and enjoy wines by the half or full glass along with some charcuterie, artisan cheeses, popcorn or other food selections from their full-service restaurant menu. If you’re a wine lover or just learning, this place is a must-try.

A Taste for Wine

Downtown St. Petersburg’s original wine bar was established in 1995. They offer over twenty different wines by the glass, a curated selection from across the world. Don’t miss them on First Fridays, when they feature live music, great food and balcony seating overlooking all the action on Central Avenue.

Dracula’s Legacy Wine Bar

A cozy wine bar in the heart of downtown, this local haunt is owned by two Transylvanians who wanted to bring a little bit of their history with them to sunny St. Pete. Boasting a wonderful selection of white, red, rose and sparkling wines to choose from, as well as a delicious hand-crafted tapas menu, Dracula’s Legacy is perfect for an after-dinner drink with friends or a romantic date night. They also host a number of exciting events throughout the month like food and wine pairings, wine glass painting, artist parties, book clubs and even yoga classes. Make sure to stop by—Max and Ramona are DYING to meet you!
