8 Fun Facts you didn’t know about St. Pete Beach

Home to crystal clear waters, pristine white sands and plenty of family fun, St. Pete Beach is one of the finest beaches in Florida. In fact, it’s ranked #1 on Trip Advisor’s 2020 list of the Top 25 Beaches in the United States. But there’s so much more to this barrier island that sets it apart from Florida’s wealth of award-winning beaches. Here are 8 fun facts about St. Pete Beach that will inspire you to visit this blissful Floridian favorite.

The silky white powder that lines the beach was once mountains of impenetrable quartz hundreds of miles from Florida’s shores. It took Mother Earth more than two million years to produce the velvety smooth sand you’ll find here today. Much of the sand on Florida beaches is produced by the weathering of continental land masses like the Appalachian Mountains and washed down America’s rivers into the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

Once a playground for America’s social elite, the iconic Don CeSar Beach Resort was built in 1926 by Thomas Rowe to resemble a Mediterranean-style castle. When it opened two years later, a room on the European plan went for $24 per night. The “Pink Palace” can be seen for miles to the east and west and has its place on nautical charts as a permanent marker for boaters. Today, the color is protected by law as a mariner’s guide.

The 47-mile Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is one of Florida’s most popular and unique urban pathways. Grab some skates or rent a bike and venture down the trail which connects St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs along an old railroad route. Along the way, you’ll pass several county parks, coastal areas and communities. It also provides access points to nearly every town in the area.

The St. Pete Road Runners, the premier running club in the St. Pete/Tampa area, invites runners and walkers every month to join their evening St. Pete Beach 5k Race. The Alden’s Director of Community Relations, Mary Ann Renfrow, is one of the founding members of this group! The largest beach race in the area is run entirely on the beach, in the sand, and is a great way to stay fit on vacation. Pack your sneakers and retain your summer beach bod while you’re away from the gym.

The sunset at Pass-A-Grille features a rare sight as the last sliver of light dips below the waterline: The Green Flash. This phenomenon—named for the sudden and briefly changing color—only lasts about a second or two but, if you have a chance to witness it, your love for St. Pete Beach sunsets will grow even stronger. Pack a few beers and head down to the southern end of the beach to catch this natural wonder.

Grouper is a dinner table staple in St. Pete Beach. Head down to Sea Critters Cafe—where it’s always island time—to sample their grouper sandwich, voted Best in the South by Southern Living Magazine. You can have it made to order and served in six different ways. They also serve grouper tacos, fritters and salads, all freshly prepared to order and worth every bit of the wait.

Right next door is St. Petersburg where you’ll find some incredibly unique boutiques, eateries and hordes of vintage goodies tucked away on Central Avenue. Come here for a fresh and funky Florida vibe where old St. Pete mixes with new for an artsy and authentic local experience. “God’s waiting room” as it was once known is more like a heavenly rave these days with downtown bursting on weekend nights with music and street life.

We’re called The Sunshine City for a reason. The average amount of days of sunshine per year here is 361 but we do hold the Guinness World Record for logging the most consecutive days of sunshine: 768 days which began in 1967. The year-round gorgeous weather makes St. Pete the perfect destination for your getaway no matter the time of year. We can’t wait to welcome you!

2021 Spring Training

All Month Long

The Grapefruit League schedule was recently revised to limit travel, so the Blue Jays will play their 28 exhibition games against the Yankees, Pirates, Phillies, Tigers and Orioles. You’ll see players following health protocols on the field, in the dugout and around the complex, but the day-to-day workings of Spring Training and the players in camp will be different, too.

For the Blue Jays, this means a heavy dose of top prospects in camp. This will be a valuable development tool for many young players, especially coming off a missed 2020 Minor League season. In a typical Spring Training, many of these prospects would be across town at the club’s training complex, which is separate from TD Ballpark. Having them over on the Major League side to start camp will provide a clear look at the Blue Jays’ young talent, and should make the latter innings of exhibition games worth watching as they get some reps.

You Stay, We Give! Discover How Alden Suites is Giving Back These Days

Here at the Alden, we are passionate about serving and helping our Tampa Bay community in a variety of ways. In these pandemic times, we have sought out new ways to aid those in need, giving of our time and donating supplies and funding in any way possible. We sponsor the First Tee of St. Petersburg Brittany & Friends Golf Tournament, help keep our beaches and waterways clean through our work with Tampa Bay Watch, and give to feed hungry children through The Kind Mouse. We also help people in need through the Gulfport Senior Center, the Guardian Ad Litem Program, and PARC. We’d like to share some of the ways we’ve participated in giving back to our community over the past year.

2020, A Year Like No Other

In Spring 2020, charity began at home when the quarantine shut down tourism for a time and the Alden was closed for six weeks. Even during this period of zero hotel revenue, Alden Suites paid our employees’ share of health insurance premiums, ensuring they wouldn’t lose their healthcare. We also provided cash gifts to help our team members buy food, and our management team volunteered at local food bank pickups that served the St. Pete Beach hospitality community.

Mary Ann Renfrow, the Alden Suites’ Director of Community Relations, says: “I have been thinking about what our employees have been through during the most difficult months for our business.  While we did provide some support to them, I believe that the support that came from our community was even more meaningful.  The Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce was instrumental in connecting business owners and employees to avenues of support coming from national, state, and local governments.  Feeding Tampa Bay were the true heroes for the hospitality industry, ramping up to serve those that were in need with their mobile food pantries.  They also distributed Walmart gift cards to our employees to purchase fruits and vegetables.  Then we had businesses from the local hospitality industry on St. Pete Beach, hurting themselves, stepping up to feed other hospitality employees.  I specifically want to recognize Grillin’ n Chillin’, Boulevard Burgers, and the awesome management of the St. Pete Beach Chick-fil-a franchise.  Chick-fil-a even delivered lunch after we were back up and running for all of our employees.  We had a vendor, Coast Brothers, work with another one of their clients in St. Petersburg, Atwater’s to provide a takeout meal for all of our employees and their family members.

The Alden Continues to Give Back in 2021

In 2021, the giving continues. This February, in recognition of their support of hospitality industry employees, and with gratitude for their support of our Alden employees during the past year, the Alden presented a donation of $2,500 to Feeding Tampa Bay at the Annual Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber Dinner. Next, we launched into the new year with the Cure on Wheels Capitol Ride. Mary Ann Renfrow has participated in their annual Capitol Rides for several years now. The Alden also provides our company truck to support the riders and carry supplies during the rides, and in 2021, we donated a stay at the Alden for the Cure on Wheels raffle.

Cure on Wheels, Inc. raises money to help individuals and families in the Tampa Bay area cope with a diagnosis of cancer through an annual bike ride that travels along the beautiful roads just north of Tampa. The goal is to raise awareness of the important work that Moffitt Cancer Center does in advancing the successful treatment of cancer through their research and highlight the importance of continued support through funding with our Florida State Legislators. Cure on Wheels has donated over $1,000,000.00 locally throughout the Tampa Bay area to specific and targeted programs to assist patients and their families whose lives have been changed by the diagnosis of cancer.

We Invite You To Join Us!

This February, starting in Tallahassee, the Alden-sponsored team of 40 cyclists made a 325- mile trek back to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. We would like to invite the Alden family to join us in donating to this worthy cause. When you donate, you’ll receive our “Everything is Upside Down” commemorative shirt with the Alden Suites logo. This is a great way to support our courageous riders because cancer doesn’t stop during a pandemic, and neither do we!

Here is the link to donate and receive a t-shirt: https://www.cureonwheels.org/donate/shirt/

Because of YOU, our loyal guests, we are able to give and support causes that benefit the entire Tampa Bay community. You have our eternal gratitude. We hope that knowing how the Alden gives back will give you joy as you stay with us and that we will inspire you to find ways to help those in need in your neck of the woods.

Win an Alden Vacation and a Trip to the NEW Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center!

Have you visited St. Petersburg’s new Pier yet? Not only is it a fabulous dining and entertainment district, but it’s also the home to the brand-new Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center! Developed and operated by Tampa Bay Watch, a non-profit founded in 1993, the Discovery Center tells you the story of Tampa Bay’s vast and complex estuary — its history and recovery, and Tampa Bay Watch’s pivotal role in that effort. Next time you’re here at the Alden, make plans to take a short drive to downtown St. Pete and check out our newest attraction.

The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is the place to go for an entertaining, hands-on experience. We ALL love the Tampa Bay beaches, and there’s a reason why our water is so clear and our sand is so pure and white. Find out all you need to know about Tampa Bay’s unique ecosystem, right in the middle of it all! Tampa Bay Watch has been working for over 30 years to clean up our shorelines, and they do it in very unique ways. The Discovery Center’s Estuary Habitat and Touch Tank are key to understanding how the whole ecosystem works together- showcasing a variety of species found in Tampa Bay waters.

If you’re looking for a rainy-day family outing in St. Pete, the Discovery Center is just the ticket.  But the Discovery Center is not strictly an indoor experience. They also have a cool “wet classroom” with an amphitheater-style observation deck that hosts outdoor demonstrations.

The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is a perfect family activity for visitors to St. Pete Beach, and it also plays host to a variety of fun and educational events. Science Saturdays, Squid Encounters, and Adult Trivia nights are just a few of the featured activities that visitors to the Discovery Center can look forward to in the coming months. Click here to see all the fun coming your way!

The Alden is a proud sponsor of Tampa Bay Watch, having donated tens of thousands of dollars to the nonprofit over the last few years. We’re so excited to finally have a concrete way for our guests to experience the Watch’s vital work for themselves. That’s why we’re offering a special contest to award one lucky family with a Family Fun Day at the Discovery Center!

AND NOW, IT’S YOUR CHANCE TO WIN!

We’re teaming up with the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center to give away an amazing prize. Here’s how to enter:

On Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, share a photo or two of how YOUR family helps keep our planet healthy. Whether it’s recycling at home, picking up trash, drinking from reusable water bottles, or volunteering with a local environmental group, we want to see what you’re up to! Make sure to use the hashtags #dawnofdiscovery #aldenwow and #aldendiscovery and to post publicly so we can see your picture!

We will pick one person to win a Family Fun Day gift basket that will include these two adorable plushies, a Tampa Bay Watch hat, 4 Tampa Bay Watch bandannas, a family 4-pack of tickets to the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, and a 2-night stay at the Alden.

Mary Ann Renfrow, the Alden’s Director of Community Relations, will announce the contest winner LIVE on Facebook on Monday, September 28. So get to saving the planet and sharing your stories today!
